Healing Touch – Fibromyalgia Massage

Healing Touch - Fibromyalgia MassageFor many, fibromyalgia (fibro) affects quality of life.  A licensed massage therapist will treat many clients challenged with this condition.  Unfortunately there is no cure, but massage is a viable option to help ease the pain.  Massage is unique in that the sensory pathways for pain are relaxed, and in many cases disrupted with massage treatments.  The following techniques should be requested during your massage treatment with a licensed massage therapist who is comfortable working with those who live with fibromyalgia.

  1. Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT):   Relieves muscular pain through balancing the musculoskeletal system with the nervous system by working directly on trigger and tender points. This therapy can dramatically reduce pain, improve flexibility, and balance and strengthen the musculoskeletal system by interrupting the transmission of pain, as well as improve circulation in and around affected musculature.
  2. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF): PNF requires the client to push against the therapist’s resistance, allowing individual muscles and muscle groups to lengthen to reduce muscle hyper-tonicity.  Thus, easing pain.
  3. Myofacial Release:  This technique gently relieves restrictions and tightness in connective tissue (fascia). When properly performed, it may help to expand organs, release connective tissues pulling on bones, allow muscle fibers to relax and lengthen, as well as increase circulation.
  4. Passive stretching:  Also known as relaxed or static-passive stretching is another approach to relieving muscle tension and spasms associated with fibromyalgia. Passive stretching works by moving the limb or head until resistance is met, then maintaining the stretched position while the body fully relaxes. An appropriate passive stretch can increase range of motion and help the loss of flexibility that usually develops with fibro.

In addition to easing muscle pain, massage has been proven to have a positive impact on sleep and mood as well.  Talk to a certified, licensed massage therapist about your specific triggers to assist in creating an effective treatment plan.
